Groom's Outfit
Choosing a Suit for your Wedding

We all know that when it comes to weddings, brides receive a lot of attention. And deservedly so.
But it is of course just as big of a day for the groom(s).
Choosing the most dashing outfit for the groom is a very personal undertaking.
Your outfit should reflect your personality while also be flattering in fit and comfortable so you can feel your best.
There are several aspects to consider when choosing a wedding suit:
season, color, fabric and style being the four main and rather broad categories.
Suit Selection by Season
Autumn / Winter
If your wedding date falls into autumn or winter, a suit made of heavier material is probably a good choice.
That could be a wool, a wool-silk or a wool-mohair blend.
Traditionally, darker suit colors (dark blue, black, charcoal grey) are chosen for weddings in the winter/autumn.
Spring / Summer
For spring or summer weddings, lighter colors (beige, grey, white or light blue) as well as light, breathable fabrics are the recommended choice.
Cotton and linen suits will allow you to stay comfortable even in warmer weather.
Suit Color
If you want to go for a bolder and more playful look that makes a statement, opt for vibrant colors such as brighter blues and pastels, especially for the summer.
Those are very much in season.
I have seen a lot of grooms choosing suits in ivory, a light green pastel and cobalt blue colors. They make for a stunning look.
Suit Style

When it comes to choosing a suit for your wedding, there are different styles to decide between:
Tuxedo
If you are planning a very formal, elegant wedding, a tuxedo might be for you.
Tuxedos usually come in black or midnight blue and differ from suits in their detailing.
A tuxedo is worn with a white shirt, a black (silk) bow tie and a formal waistcoat or cummerbund.
Two-piece Suit
A two-piece (meaning matching jacket and trousers) suit is a less formal choice.
Three-piece Suit
A three-piece suit consists of a jacket, trousers and a matching vest or waistcoat.
As a very stylish choice, it also allows you to remove the jacket at the reception for a more relaxed and comfortable look.
Nordstrom have created a great overview here that explains everything to know about suits:
cuts, styles and other details (lapels, trouser cuffs, etc.).

I personally think that a tailored groom's suit in a bold color like burgundy or sage makes for a very attractive, masculine look.
Groom's Accessories

Shoes and Socks
Popular shoe models for grooms are oxford, derby, loafer, brogue but also sneakers.
In terms of color, black and navy or dark blue are probably the most frequently chosen colors, along with brown or grey.
No matter which shoes you pick, make sure they go well with your entire outfit.
Brides
has a nice guide explaining which shoes go best with which suit.
Cufflinks
If you buy a shirt with French cuffs, the shirt will not have buttons on the cuffs so that you can wear it with cufflinks.
Cufflinks are a nice accent to compliment your suit.
Many grooms choose, silver, gold or brass for their cufflinks.
You can get custom, engraved cufflinks for example on Etsy,
Moda London or
Grom Schmuck Pforzheim.
Belt
Many experts recommend that you don’t wear a belt with your wedding suit because it takes focus away from the suit.
If your trousers are tailored so that they fit you perfectly, you won’t need a belt anyways 😉.
Tie or Bow-tie
Traditionally, bow-ties are worn with more formal suits.
However, there are no rules that say you can’t wear a bow-tie with a more casual outfit.
It’s your big day, so you make the rules.
In terms of selecting a bow-tie; they come in three modalities: clip-ons, pre-tied and self-tie.
They also vary in size and shape, so make sure whichever one you choose compliments the rest of your outfit.
You can find a selection of ties and bow-ties online at Hawes & Curtis,
Tieroom or Bow-ties on Willen, among others.
Pocket square or Boutonnière
If you want a pop of color to brighten your suit, opt for a pocket square with a bright color or pattern to match the motive of your wedding.
To make it an elegant look, choose pocket squares made from higher quality materials such as cotton, silk or linen instead of polyester blends.
